And if a new gastronomic trend begins to exert linguistic influence, we may also have the option of having a dog’s brinner in the future. It appears that we’ve finally realized we don’t have to restrict breakfast food to the hours when we’re least likely to have the time to consume it.
Eggs, bacon and sausages, pancakes, waffles, and bowls of chocolatey or healthy breakfast cereal. These are all foods that many of us enjoy, but which, at least in theory, should not be consumed after noon. But thankfully, a new culinary trend is beginning to change that – meet the concept of brinner, in which you are permitted to enjoy the delights of a ‘full English’ (= bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans, fried bread) with a glass of wine in the evening.
Brinner is a lexical and culinary combination of breakfast and dinner. Not quite the same as brunch, which is typically eaten in the late morning and frequently accompanies the expectation of a second “proper” meal later in the day. What is for supper? However, the brinner concept appears to be taking off in our own kitchens, with many UK supermarkets reporting a sharp increase in sales of eggs, bacon, ready-made pancakes, and the like.
